BREAKING NEWS : Vincent Enyeama Quits Super Eagles

Vincent Enyeama has confirmed he is quitting international football with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Speaking to Channels Sports, Enyeama said that he does not want to disrupt the ongoing rebuilding process of Coach Sunday Oliseh.

Enyeama has checked out of the team’s hotel in Belgium and heading to his club in France.

On Tuesday, the Lille goalkeeper had a misunderstanding with Coach Oliseh and was asked to leave the camp of the team.

But after the intervention of the NFF, he was allowed to stay but it seems the goalie had already made the decision to quit.

Enyeama, who joined the team on Tuesday (October 6), had reportedly questioned Coach Oliseh’s choice of naming Ahmed Musa captain for the friendly games against DR Congo and Cameroon.

The coach did not like it and asked him to leave the team’s hotel and immediately made moves to call up Dele Alampasu.

President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, told Channels TV that evening that he had spoken with the coach and player and “the matter has been resolved and Enyeama would stay in camp”.

However, there were signs that the issues were still raging when on Wednesday, Vincent Enyeama took to his Instagram page to express disappointment.

Snakes invade school as flood submerges Edo community

EVBOTUBU — IT is easily one of the fastest growing communities around Benin- City, the capital of Edo State, but this is not the best of times for residents of Evbotubu in Egor Local government Area of the state.  They are angry that the   road leading community from the heart of the city is impassable.  Whenever it rains, bus drivers charge as much as N200 from the Oba Market in the city centre to Evbotubu, instead of the normal N80 due to the appalling condition of the road.

•Submerged Evbotubu Primary School
The most affected government institution in the community is the Evbotubu Primary School,   constructed in the 50s. The school, which had two sections, Evbotubu I and II with over 1000 pupils before it was overrun by flood,   currently has less than 300 pupils,    as most parents have withdrawn their pupils from the school.

When  Niger Delta Voice  visited the school, last week, flood had swamped the field and the open portion between the two blocks of classrooms. Children could no longer access the field to play during their break for fear of drowning in the flood or being bitten by snakes, which have found the swampy school field a haven.

According to some teachers in the school, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, “the environment is not conducive for learning as a result of the flooding and nature of the environment.”

Appeal

“Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was here in 2007 when he came to campaign in Evbotubu. He promised that if voted into office, he would renovate the school and tackle the flooding challenge. Again, he was here during the campaign for his re-election in 2012. “So, we are appealing to him to fulfill his campaign promises by coming to our aid. He should direct the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to renovate the school so that our children can learn in comfortable environment without fear,” they said.

The teachers also appealed to the community to collaborate with the government in the renovation and clearing of the flooded school premises by contributing financially and morally.

Over 10 snakes killed in our classrooms – Pupil

Some of the pupils spoken to expressed fears about their learning environment. One of them, a primary four pupil, Eromosele Emuoveon, said that whenever it rained, snakes and other reptiles swim from the flooded swamp into their classrooms. “We killed more than 10 snakes in our classrooms whenever it rained. We have been lucky so far that no pupil had been bitten by snake, so we do not like the situation here and we appeal to the Comrade Governor to come to our assistance by stopping the flooding and renovating the school,” he said.

Another pupil, who simply called himself Anderson, added, “Oga, when it rains here, we are always afraid of drowning as the flood usually gets to the DPC level. Older pupils always carry the younger ones in the lower classes on their backs to avoid flood sweeping them away. The governor as a lover of children should come and help us.”

Children unsafe in the school

However, the youth chair of Evbotubu/Iguedayi community, Mr. David Ogbeide, while commenting on the neglect of the community by the government, said: “We feel that this community is not part of Edo State. Our roads are very, very bad and flood has taken over the only government primary school that served more than five communities in the area.”

As for the control of the flood in the school and erosion, he said, “Nobody has come and we have written to them, no reply. “But they know how to come here during elections to campaign, you have been to the school, it is empty and nobody wants to risk the lives of his children. Again, there is a high-tension power line across the school and with the school submerged; the lives of the children are not safe.

•Submerged Evbotubu Primary School
“We only pray that no high-tension wire should cut because the repercussion will be bad, so for us in the community, the solution is not only fencing the school or removing the flood, government should rehabilitate the road where the school is located because it leads to other villages, such as Iguedaiyi, Iguogie and several others.”

No fund to rehabilitate dilapidated schools – Officials

Attempt to speak with the Executive Chairman of the State Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Chief Stephen Alao, failed. However, some officials of the board, who spoke incognito, blamed lack of funds for non-rehabilitation of many primary schools in the state. They said that as soon as the finances of the state improved, the board would renovate most of the dilapidated primary schools, including the Evbotubu Primary School.

An official of the Edo State Ministry of Environment said the construction of the Benin Water Storm by the state government would take care of the flooding and erosion in Evbotubu and environs

Former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke Arrested In UK

The immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been arrested in London.

Mrs Alison-Madueke was arrested along with four other persons in relation to corruption allegations being investigated by the UK National Crime Agency.

Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke has been in London for some time, reportedly on health grounds.

Under her watch the then CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, alleged missing funds in the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (NNPC), amounting to 20 billion dollars.

Few days ago at the UN General Assembly, President Muhammadu Buhari had made it clear that those who misappropriated billions of naira belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation would soon be prosecuted.

It is not yet known if Mrs Allison-Madueke’s arrest was based on a request from the Nigerian Government.

It was alleged earlier in the year that the former Petroleum Minister, who was one of the closest to the administration of former President Jonathan, would flee the country, to avoid being prosecuted over allegations of fraud, especially in the NNPC.

This was following the defeat of the former President at the Presidential election in April.

She, at the time, denied seeking asylum in any part of the world, stating that the Jonathan administration had done a lot in the Oil and Gas industry that cannot be rubbished by malicious claims.

The 21 Ministerial Nominees List Sent To Senate President By @MBuhari Is Finally Out

At the nick of time, President Muhammadu Buhari surprised his anxious compatriots with a list of his “dream team”. He lived up to his promise that members his cabinet would be named in September. Like a true soldier, Buhari employed element of surprise which caught his detractors unawares. At a time the phones were buzzing with condemnation for not submitting ministerial list, his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abba Kyari and Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, showed up at the Office of the Senate President at about 5.20pm on Wednesday to make the list available to the legislature. The surprise package changed the tune of discourse in the media and public space, especially on the internet. The Senate had risen from plenary at about 1.30pm and adjourned till October 6.

Sticking to his “slow and steady” style, the President was painstaking in picking his team and he chose the 55th Independence broadcast to explain the three-month delay.

“Our government set out to do things methodically and properly. We received the handing over notes from the outgoing government only four days before taking over. Consequently, the Joda Transition Committee submitted its report on the reorganisation of the Federal Government structure after studying the handover notes. It would have been haphazard to announce ministers when the government had not finalised the number of ministries to optimally carry the burden of governance,” the President said in his nationwide address yesterday.

What Buhari did not tell Nigerians was that the delay helped him to conserve N845.558 million accruable to 42 ministers. The figure excludes the salaries and allowances for three ministerial aides, escort drivers and police orderlies.

The President has saved N79, 578, 709.56 as salaries for would-be 42 ministers between May 29 and September 30 and N765, 979, 200 savings (at about N18, 237,600 for each minister) for accommodation, furniture and vehicle loans.

According to a document obtained from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the monthly salary of a minister is about N631,577.60  including: basic salary (N168,866:66); vehicle fuelling and maintenance (N126,650); personal assistant (N42,216.66); domestic staff (N126,650); entertainment (N75,990); utilities (N50,660); monitoring (N33,773.33) and newspapers/periodicals (N25,330).

Besides, a minister entitled to about N18, 237,600 covering the following allowances: accommodation (N4, 052,800); furniture (N6,079,200) and vehicle loan (N8,105,600) on assumption of office.

The politics of the ministerial nomination

Although the President on Wednesday submitted a list of 21 ministerial nominees as the first set of names (out of a minimum of 36 and maximum of 42) for screening and approval, Nigerians are eager to know the mindset of the President and the parameter he used in picking those on the list.  Investigations showed that five factors determined the nomination of ministers by the President. These are:  strict adherence to principle of non-interference in choosing his cabinet; integrity or pedigree; selfless service; old acquaintances and less exposure to political influence.

For the first time, ex-Presidents/Heads of State, governors, ex-governors, members of the National Assembly,  political god-fathers  and even the leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), had less input into the ministerial nominees. It was learnt that Buhari received a heap of recommendations but his usual response, laced with infectious smile to defuse tension, was “noted, alright’ amidst intermittent nodding. Most of the lobbyists went away with satisfaction that their candidates will make it but the more the lobbying, the less the chance of such candidates.

A highly-placed source in the presidency said: “Buhari was his own man in choosing his cabinet although he took certain factors into consideration. Those who came to advise him assisted in providing direction or guiding his mind. At a point, the APC leadership could not give exact situation of things.

“He has done away with appointments based on favouritism, god-fatherism and egoism.

“Apart from merit, Buhari gave ministerial slots to those who have the ability, those who can deliver and those he had trusted over the years including those who worked with him when he held the forte as chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and those in the trenches with him in the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) and the Congress for Progressives Change (CPC). He has rewarded selflessness, perseverance and loyalty.”

Untold story of how 21  Nigerians made first list.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed is the ebullient media face of the struggle for change that brought President Muhammadu Buhari to power. A research-based media manager, Mohammed started as a lone ranger in leading the opposition’s campaign against the PDP before others joined the fray. He brought a new dictum that “a tree can make the difference.” A lawyer by training, but a born-journalist by nature, the history of the defeat of PDP is incomplete without mentioning the Mohammed’s name. He was a thorn in PDP’s flesh, especially when Jonathan was President. Besides keeping the ruling party on its toes, he constantly drew out the the PDP media team with his constructive criticisms. He was harassed, intimidated and detained by security agencies. A product of the famous Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the inclusion of this Oro-born publicist of the APC in Buhari’s cabinet might just be the icing on the cake.  His inclusion on the list is also a manifestation of Buhari’s readiness for business and a sign that hard work pays. There is no doubt that Mohammed will bring his experience to bear in a higher office and add value to the Buhari administration.

Arguably the conscience of the party, Chief Audu Ogbeh’s nomination is acceptable to most party leaders. He does not suffer fool at all and his ability to call a spade a spade brought earned him the nomination on a platter of gold. A walking encyclopedia, Ogbeh has spent his political career fighting for the oppressed and warning the political class against the danger of unemployment even when he was in the conservative National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the Second Republic. Buhari needs somebody in the mould of Ogbeh to drum the truth into his ears most of the times and the former Minister of Communication in the Second Republic has an overdose of wisdom.

His missionary journey into opposition politics began in 2004 when, as a sitting National Chairman of of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  he wrote a stinking letter to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to alert the former leader that Nigeria was drifting into abyss. Though arrested and detained by the Buhari-Idiagbon military junta in 1984, destiny has brought Ogbeh and Buhari together to re-fix the nation.

A man who lives by what he preaches, Ogbeh’s natural habitat is agriculture. It won’t be a surprise if he is asked to man this portfolio. He is returning to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) after 32 years.

Notwithstanding the political mudslinging preempting his nomination, the inclusion of ex-Governor Babatunde Fashola brings a rare credibility to Buhari’s choice of ministers. Throughout the campaign by the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fashola’s sterling performance was a major selling point for the Buhari candidature against the inept PDP administration. Perceived political disagreements nothwithstanding, Fashola remains the choice of his political leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu any time. When intrigues were almost overshadowing Fashola’s nomination, Tinubu came out to clear the air to declare that the ex-governor is his son in whom he is well-pleased. Tinubu shocked Fashola’s predators in Lagos when he said: “Born of this motley stew is the recent gossip mongering that I have willfully instigated false and negative reports against former Governor Fashola to thwart him from being appointed to a major post in the Buhari administration.

“I want to declare clearly and categorically that these rancid attacks do not come from me nor do I endorse them. An attack against the performance of Governor Fashola is indirectly an attack against me and the edifice of achievements we have constructed in leading Lagos State.”

Tinubu’s voice drowned Fashola’s traducers and set the stage for Buhari’s final decision on Fashola. Either way, Tinubu takes credit for this good choice.

Mrs. Kemi Adeosun is the immediate past Finance Commissioner in Ogun State.  The ministerial nominee from the Gateway State is twice lucky as her name is among the 16 nominees forwarded to the State House of Assembly for screening by Governor Ibikunle Amosun. She has the choice of choosing between returning to the Ogun State cabinet or moving up to join the FEC. Unknown to many, her ministerial appointment came after President Muhammadu Buhari rejected Chief Bode Mustapha, a former senator, who was the anointed choice of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. It was learnt that Chief Obasanjo met with Buhari twice to market his loyal candidate, who was sacked as national auditor of the PDP because of Obasanjo. But, the President simply told the former Head of State: “If you bring a younger element, I will prefer this.” A worried Obasanjo later left the issue to Governor Ibikunle Amosun to resolve after due consultations by both leaders. The one-time commissioner is a financial expert, who has helped in the reflation of the Ogun State economy.

Dr. Osagie Ehanire appears to be a favoured candidate of a former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. T.Y. Danjuma. Despite the fact that he is a Bini, he is rated as a close relation of Danjuma’s jewel Senator Daisy Danjuma. The appointment of Ehanire, a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of Danjuma Foundation, will add value to Buhari’s cabinet. An outstanding consultant surgeon, Ehanire is a specialist in Anesthesiology, General Surgery and orthopedic Trauma Surgery. Being a major backer of Buhari against his abandoned candidate, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, the former Defence Minister has the ears of the President because of his vision, truthfulness, contentment, and heart of gold. Neither Danjuma nor his ministerial boy will be a liability to Buhari.

Save for his on-going probe by the PDP government in Rivers State and media assaults by Governor Nyesom Wike, the nomination of ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi for a ministerial position was taken for granted. Amaechi bore a suicidal risk to dump the PDP to pitch tent with Buhari even before the APC stakeholders zeroed in on the General  as their presidential standard bearer. He laid down his life to ensure that Buhari emerged the APC candidate. In the heat of the campaign, a former governor told Amaechi: “I would have died by now if I take this kind of risk you have heaped on yourself.” Beyond being a die-hard loyalist of Buhari, the qualities which earned Amaechi the ministerial nomination are his performance records, vision and energy to render untainted service and ability to speak truth to the throne. He, will no doubt, be one minister who can tell Buhari the truth whenever he errs. His greatest asset is his love for quality projects which can stand the test of time. He has no taste for wealth acquisition, a personage which makes him fit into Buhari’s agenda.

Another ministerial nomination foretold is that of Chief Ogbonnaya Onu because of his reserved nature, academic excellence and his cosmopolitan pedigree. Onu has a string of excellent records that cannot be wished away by any puritan like Buhari. He obtained distinction in Physics and Chemistry at the Higher School Certificate examination at the College of Immaculate Conception (CIC), Enugu, graduating as the best overall student. In 1976, he graduated with a First Class honours degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos.

Besides, Onu’s moral credentials make him a natural choice for a cabinet position. As an Igbo leader, he has been a consistent lone voice in the southeastern regions’ political wilderness. When the Southeast rose against Buhari, Onu withstood insults and barrage of attacks on his person for supporting a northerner. He had been a faithful follower of Buhari right from their sojourn in the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

One of the eggheads and a quintessential democrat on the nomination list is ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi. He earned Buhari’s respect with his speech on the day he “purportedly lost” the Ekiti State governorship election to Mr. Ayo Fayose. Fayemi set a template for the outcome of the 2015 general election and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan wasted no time in emulating Fayemi’s model in conceding defeat to Buhari.

The international profile of Fayemi and the ex-governor’s hitch-free conduct of the APC National Convention/ Presidential Primaries informed Buhari’s decision to nominate the academic.  A hero of the struggle for the return of democracy in 1999, Fayemi has age, vision, honesty, integrity and selfless service to his advantage.  For the Ekiti State ministerial slot, Buhari was confronted with four good choices namely:  Fayemi, ex-Governor Segun Oni, Mr. Dele Alake (a one-tme Commissioner for Information & Strategy in Lagos State) and human rights activist Mr. Femi Falana, (SAN). A source in the presidency said: “To settle for Fayemi, a lot of horse-trading was involved because all the candidates from Ekiti State have impeccable characters. APC leaders were consulted at various levels and concessions were made.

“For instance, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo was interested in Oni who was humiliated from the PDP because of him. Some APC leaders were also interested in other candidates. “At a point, ex-Governor Oni untied the knotty knot when he said he was not interested in ministerial appointment. From the ministerial deal, Oni, who is increasingly becoming popular in Ekiti State because of the governance standard he set, might be APC’s likely governorship candidate in 2018.” The deal could not be independently confirmed on Thursday.

General Abdulrahman Dambazzau served as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) between 2008 and 2010 Dambazzau’s path crossed Buhari’s when he was aide-de-camp to a former COAS in 1979.  Not minding the age and career differences, Dambazau and Buhari have bonded in the last 36 years. It was therefore not surprising that he coordinated security for the APC Presidential Campaign Council during the electioneering from January to March this year. He played a similar role as the Chairman of the Security Committee of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) when Buhari took a shot at the presidency in 2011. Armed with a Ph.D in Criminology from the University of Keele in 1989, the kernel of friendship between him and Buhari is “trust”. As a military police, Dambazau said his faith in Buhari was unshakeable.

He said: “My relationship with Mr. President is not hinged on political appointment. Whether he assigns me to a particular office or not, my resolve to ensure that he succeeds remains unshakeable.”

AN ardent follower of the President, Sen. Sirika Hadi’s nomination is based on his consistent advocacy for change in the country. He went through thick and thin with Buhari when no the President had been written off politically. The pilot-turned politician, he was elected a
senator under the defunct CPC in 2011. He was one of the few who encouraged Buhari not to give up on the presidential race. In an interview on January 10, 2013, he made it clear that Buhari will run for the presidency in 2015.

The inclusion of Abubakar Malami, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in the ministerial nominee list is a reward of integrity.  He is one lawyer whose love for money is secondary. He handled much Buhari’s electoral litigation brief for free because of his belief in the President as a leader Nigeria needs. Born in Birnin Kebbi, he was a former National Legal Adviser for the CPC. He has an endless taste for sponsoring private citizen bills. He shares the same vision and belief with Buhari. In an interview in 2012, Malami said: “I think that we should continue to operate federalism as an institution but curtail the level of expenses associated with it. We do not need a full time National Assembly since it is a very costly institution.”

Born in Gombe State, Amina Mohammed, is a Special Advisor to the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Post-2015 Development Planning. Her nomination is based on merit having earned a global reputation. According to the UN, “in 2005, she was “charged with the coordination of the debt relief funds ($1billion per annum) towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria. Unknown to many, she co-founded the Afri-Projects Consortium in 1991, which handled many jobs when Buhari was in the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) established by the late Gen. Abacha to manage oil windfall. The search for Mohammed came in handy because the APC in Gombe is factionalised following disagreement over protest votes during the governorship poll which the party lost to the PDP. The President could not have picked a nominee from any of the warring groups without a compounding the problem. And the APC political leader in the state, ex-Governor Danjuma Goje’s opposition to party supremacy at the Senate has not helped the situation.

The inclusion of the indefatigable Aisha Alhassan while still awaiting the outcome of her            petition at the Taraba State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal drew some curiosity.

Analysts said it is either the APC has lost hope in the petition after it won Taraba Central senatorial seat at the tribunal on Wednesday or a deal is in the offing. It was gathered that the presidency might not want Alhassan to pursue her petition further because Governor Darius Ishaku of the PDP is a godson of Gen. T.Y. Danjuma, whom Buhari respects a lot.

Another source said: “The nomination of Alhassan might have been in anticipation of a loss at the tribunal.” A veteran of many legal battles, Alhassan is a Mumuye and a lawyer by training but her courage in the face of intimidation was said to have endeared her to Buhari too. Said a source: “The President believes she is going to be a source of inspiration to many women in the country. In January 2011 during PDP primaries, she defeated former Ambassador Anthony Manzo to win a senatorial ticket. She treads courageously in the midst of men.

“Even when she was unjustly sacked as the Chief Registrar of the High Court of Justice of the Federal Capital Territory, she fought her way through and she was justifiably reinstated many years after.”

Another meritorious hand in the list is Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). A former Vice President of Exxon Mobil in Africa,  Buhari appointed Kachikwu the NNPC chief because he was impressed by his glowing credentials as the most senior black African in any multi-national oil firm in the world with 30 years experience.

Apart from being a First Class graduate, Kachikwu also obtained a Ph.D in Law which enabled him to rise to the position of a Company Secretary in Exxon Mobil. But it was not easy for the President to convince Kachikwu to accept the job because he was afraid that he might be messed up like other Nigerians who had come home to serve.

In their negotiation, President Buhari repeatedly said: “I won’t interfere with your work. I will give you a free hand because I want to reform this oil sector once and for all”.

He is expected to be the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. But there were concerns last night that Kachikwu might be eased out of NNPC in the next few months.

Senator Udo Udoma’s nomination came from three parameters – his rich heritage of integrity, his modesty and fair-mindedness in corporate politics. A PDP member and a Senator between 1999 and 2007, he was the immediate past Board Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). While in SEC, Udoma was said to always excuse himself from meetings where issues directly related to companies where he had stakes. His corporate attitude fetched him the nomination.

The Niger State’s nominee, Ahmed Musa Ibeto, was until May 29, 2015 the Deputy Governor of the state. At a point, he fell out of favour with ex-Governor Babangida Aliyu, who persecuted him for defecting to the APC. Ibeto’s sacrifice of his governorship ambition contributed to the victory of APC in the state. His heroic struggle earned him this slot.

A former member of the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, he won the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Meritorious Award as a Youth corps member.

Popularly called “Owan”(the moon), Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, became a global citizen in 2003 when his political sponsors masterminded abduction as a sitting governor. He resisted political godfathers and left worthy legacies in Anambra State. His achievements have remained points of reference. He is averse to injustice in any form and at the point of death, he will say the truth. A 1979 medical graduate, Ngige retired as a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Health. He is one of the few Igbo leaders who championed the election of President
Muhammadu Buhari. His virtues and loyalty and rich political resume as a senator, informed his nomination by the President. He will bring a torch of the “moon” to Buhari’s cabinet.

Born in 1964, Barrister Solomon Dalung was a former Personal Assistant to the late Chief Solomon Lar, when he served as governor of Plateau.  A former chairman of  Langtang South Local Government Area, Dalung is popularly known among his people as ‘Igbarman Otarok’ (meaning the ‘thunder of Tarok nation’). His knowledge of grassroots politics must have led to his appointment.

Adebayo Shittu was Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo State. His preference for a Spartan life endeared him to the President. Imbued with integrity and uncommon commitment to anti-corruption crusade, he seems to be the poorest of the lot. A close associate of Buhari in the CPC, Shittu runs ascetic lifestyle. His commitment to Islam is inspiring. It was learnt that these qualities that made Buhari to identify and appreciate his leadership qualities for a ministerial slot. A former governorship candidate of the CPC in the state, Shittu is from Oke-Ogun part of the state where itinerant herdsmen often clash with local farmers.

Who comes in the next batch?

Nigerians are not done with Buhari yet. They are expecting him to complete the list of ministerial nominees in line with the provision of the 1999 Constitution. Section147 (1-3). The section stipulates that “There shall be such offices of ministers of the government of the federation as may be established by the resident. Any appointment to the office of minister of the government of the federation shall, if the nomination of any person to such office is confirmed by the Senate, be made by the President.

“Any appointment under subsection (2) of this section by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of section 14(3) of this Constitution. Provided that in giving effect to the provisions aforesaid, the President shall appoint at least one minister from each state, who shall be an indigene of such state.”

As the nation awaits the next batch of ministers, it is hoped that it will not take another three months. For now, it is arms akimbo.

#Unconstitutional: Buhari To Read Out Ministerial List On October 1st TV Broadcast

Barring any last minute changes, President Buhari will on Thursday October 1st 2015 read out his much anticipated list of ministerial nominees in the course of an independence day TV broadcast, BREAKING TIMES can report.

According to a top and informed source in President Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party who spoke to BREAKING TIMES on Wednesday on condition of anonymity, Buhari is yet to send the list of his ministerial nominees to Senate President, Bukola Saraki as required by Nigeria’s constitution.
Buhari’s reported plan to read out his list of ministerial nominees on his planned October 1st TV broadcast is not only unconstitutional but contravenes the democratic principles of separation of powers, rule of law as well as checks and balances.

“It is not clear why Buhari is taking this route to read out the names of his nominees on his October 1st broadcast when he is actually expected to forward the names to the Senate. It will be tantamount to a constitutional breach of due process and a mockery of our democratic institutions if he goes ahead to make a TV show out of it”, the source disclosed.

Following Buhari’s promise to unveil his ministerial list at the end of September 2015, a list was submitted through Senator Ita Enang, his special adviser on National Assembly Matters to Saraki Tuesday morning. But the document received by Saraki turned out to be a list of older appointments made by President Buhari.

Ondo Workers Ordered To Begin 2-Day Strike

Labour leaders under the aegis of Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) in Ondo State, on Tuesday, directed all workers in the state to embark a two-day warning strike.
The JNC chairman in the state, Sunday Adeleye, who disclosed this, said the strike became imperative so as to press home the workers demand over the non-payment of their three months salaries.
Adeleye explained that the leadership of the JNC met with the government representatives and the meeting was deadlocked, adding that the union decided to embark on the strike until the government attends to their demands.
The JNC said all workers of the state government had been directed to stay away from their offices for two days beginning from Wednesday.
He said that the strike would hold between Wednesday and Thursday, saying though Thursday had been declared a public holiday, the leadership would meet again to deliberate on the next step to take after the expiration of the warning strike.
Comrade Adeleye, who led leaders of NLC and TUC to the meeting with the state government, noted that the government was not sincere over its promise to pay July and August salaries as well as May and June deductions.
Earlier at the meeting, government's representatives, led by the head of service, Mr. Toyin Akinkuotu, had restated government's commitment to pay workers salaries from Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by government officials such as the state Attorney General, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN,) the governor's Chief of staff, Dr Kola Ademujinmi and the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Akin Adaramola

Mecca Stampede: What is Hajj and why do people go on the pilgrimage?

At least 717 people at the Hajj pilgrimage have been killed in a stampede near the Islamic holy city of Mecca.
Officials in Saudi Arabia say another 863 injured while 717 dead

It happened at a holy site called Mina, where two million people go to throw stones at pillars representing the devil.
Similar tragedies have happened at the Hajj before

What is Hajj?

Millions of Muslims travel from around the world to go to Saudi Arabia to complete the Hajj pilgrimage in the holy city of Mecca.
It is the fifth and final pillar of Islam and takes place in the 12th month of the Islamic calendar.

Why do so many people go?

It is a spiritual pilgrimage that every adult Muslim must perform at least once in their lives, if they can afford it and are physically able.
The journey is central to the faith.

What is the stoning of the devil?

Pilgrims travel to Mina, a large valley about 5km (3 miles) from Mecca, where they throw 49 stones over three days at three pillars called jamarat, which represent the devil.
It houses more than 160,000 tents where pilgrims spend the night before the event.

Why have so many people been killed before?

There have been numerous tragedies at Hajj over the years, but this latest stampede is the deadliest in 25 years.
It seem accidents happen because of the sheer amount of people that turn up.

What happens next?

The Saudi authorities have spent billions of dollars on improving transport and other infrastructure in the area in an attempt to try to prevent more accidents.

LAMORDE AND THE SENATE

The Senate Should Play By The Rules

The Senate last week began investigations into the weighty allegations brought against Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Mr George Uboh, a security consultant, had in a petition accused Lamorde of fraudulently diverting over N1 trillion recovered from those convicted of corruption. Uboh specifically mentioned instances of under-remittance and non-disclosure of proceeds recovered from criminal suspects including former Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and ex-Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun.

The petitioner alleged that Lamorde conspired with some EFFC officers and external auditors “to operate and conceal a recovery account in the Central Bank of Nigeria and excluded the balances from audited financial statements between 2005 and 2011”. The said fraud, according to Uboh, was committed between 2007 and 2008 when Lamorde was the director of operations of the EFFC as well as in the period he was acting chairman of the commission when the then chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, was away for a course at the National Institute forPolicy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.

Lamorde has dismissed the charges as a smear campaign by Uboh who is being prosecuted by the EFCC for allegedly stealing government property. This showed that the case "should not be taken seriously", Lamorde said. Given the timing of the petition, the manner in which it became a subject of investigation in the Senate and all the issues around it, there are grounds to suggest that some people may actually be working to muddle the waters in the efforts to tackle corruption in Nigeria.

Whatever may be the weight of the allegations, it is also a fact that the petition contains a germ of something very troubling. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions started investigations last week into the allegations but the Senate itself is divided over the issue because of the manner the petition was routed and the haste with which the public hearing was being conducted.
Indeed, members of the “Unity Forum” within the Senate said the investigation was illegal and a breach of the Senate standing rules, arguing that there was no record indicating that Uboh’s petition was presented to the Senate in a plenary. “In a standard parliamentary practice, a petition is routed through either a Senator or a member of the House of Representatives,” said the group in a statement. “Upon receipt of such petition, the representative will inform the presiding officer of the chamber and thereafter, present the petition in a plenary. Upon presentation in plenary, the presiding officer will invite the Senator/ Representative to lay the same petition on the table in the chamber, which automatically becomes a public document.” Even many members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Senate were opposed to the petition.

Given the foregoing, some pertinent questions are inevitable: Why is due process being sidetracked? Why couldn’t Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, chairman of the Senate adhoc committee, follow the rules as laid down? Why is it so urgent that the Senate, in the words Dino Melaye, chair of the Senate Committee on information, would “adopt any format it deemed fit?” Why did they smuggle in such vital document at a time the Senate was supposed to be on recess?

The non-adherence to due process and the hurried manner the petition was admitted raise serious questions about the motive of the sponsors. Indeed, the action is openly being interpreted as a preemptive strike by the Senate leadership to combat and intimidate the anti-graft body in its reinvigorated war against corruption. Such interpretation, true or false, does so much damage to the Senate in the current crusade against corruption and in the general efforts to rebuild our

The JNC officers led by the Chairman, Sunday Adeleye and Secretary, Wole Akinlolu, had visited the BIR premises at Alagbaka and directed all workers in the office not to show up for the test scheduled. The the position of the JNC, was conveyed through a strongly worded letter which was addressed to the BIR Chairman, Mr Akin Akinterinwa with a declaration “We say no to competency test”.
The Council in the letter described the proposed test as ill-conceived and booby trap for the staff for the management to achieve ulterior motive saying the organised labour has no confidence in the competency test being mastermind by the Chairman of BIR.

Power supply now 4,029.83MW

•Power plant
Energy Sent out by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) last Sunday hit 4,029.83MW, The Nation learnt Monday.

According to the Federal Ministry of Power in its Power Statistics of Sunday 30th August, power supply leaped by 32.02MW from the last statistics of August 25.

Of the total energy generated in period under review, the company recorded 87.9MW spinning reserve or stranded energy which the it could not wheel  to the electricity distribution companies.

The ministry made this disclosure on its website Monday, adding that the peak power generation that was 4,810.7MW on August 25 dipped to 4,516.5MW on Sunday.

It also noted that Energy Generation rose to 4,117.73MW from the last record of 4,080.86MW.
Highest peak power generation in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) was the 4,810.7 MW of August 25.

There has been significant increase in the electricity supply to customers, which most consumers have described as the usual ploy of electricity distribution companies when they are preparing to dispatch their monthly bills.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had recently decided that the Discos’ fixed charge should now be proportional to energy charge, although The Nation could not confirm whether the adjustment was effected in the August bill or whether it would commence in September.

FG Sets New Deadline For Nigerians To Get National Identification Number

THE Presidency has directed all individuals yet to enrol for the National Identification Number (NIN) to comply before January 2016.

Office of the Presidency in charge of ‎identity management, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), disclosed that it would enforce use of the NIN by citizens to conduct certain transactions in line with Section 27 of the NIMC Act 2007.

‎NIMC had earlier set September 1 as deadline for the NIN registration until President Muhammadu Buhari directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) ‎to hasten harmoniation of their biometric databases with the commission.

In a statement issued by NIMC General Manager, Corporate Communications, Abdulhamid Umar, on Monday in Abuja, the extension was in line with the president's instruction.

He stated that it was expected that with the planned harmonisation which would link all MDA biometric databases including Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Federal Road Service Corps (FRSC), Pension Commission (PenCom), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Joint Task Board (JTB), National Health Insurance Commission (NHIS), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FAMRD), among others, citizens will not be required to have their biometrics taken every time by these institutions in the near future.

The statement reads: "‎Issuing authority for National Identification Number (NIN), the NIMC has shifted the date for the commencement of the mandatory use of the NIN from September 1, 2015 to January 9, 2016.

"The commission had earlier directed that all transactions involving the identification of individuals as specified in Section 27 of the NIMC Act must be done with the NIN beginning from September 1, 2015.

"The extension would enable the commission progress further, ongoing efforts with the MDAs that have reached advanced stages of harmonisation with NIMC including the CBN, FRSC, FIRS, PenCom, INEC, NHIS, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD).

"This would help avoid the situation similar to what was experienced when the CBN wanted to enforce the cut-off date for the BVN, leading to a late rush to meet the deadline/massive turn out of citizens and the troubles they had to go through. It would also help ensure that the need for double enrolment is reduced to the barest minimum during this transition period when the harmonization is being implemented.

"Furthermore, management has taken into consideration the fact that the CBN had extended, by a few months, the deadline for the completion of the Bank Verification Number (BVN) exercise, thus extending the time frame for the completion of the harmonization it has begun with the CBN on the BVN programme."

Accordingly to the commission, a special task force has been set up by the management to ensure faster distribution of the cards by increasing the number of card collection centres by 300

Ondo 2016: ‘Why APC Will Win’

Mr Odunayo Oyewole Akinrinsola is an entrepreneur with local and international reach. The All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant, who is currently eyeing the governorship seat of Ondo State ahead next year’s gubernatorial contest in the state, speaks in this interview. BOLA BADMUS brings the excerpts:
THERE will be governorship election in Ondo State very soon as the incumbent governor, Olusegun Mimiko, is about completing his mandatory two terms in office. What is the situation on ground pertaining to the warm up to the exercise in the state?

I can tell you that a lot of aspirants are coming from the nooks and crannies of the state. I can also tell you that a lot of groups are springing up to agitate for their rights. People are talking about zoning or no zoning, there is nothing like zoning in the APC. As far as I am concerned, the state has to move forward. We have the incumbent governor there in person of Segun Mimiko, who is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and in my party, the APC, we have quite a number of us who want to run for the same seat. So, what I can say now is that the atmosphere is becoming electrified and interesting; everything is channeled towards next year. We are all building ourselves; we are building up the campaign and strategy we want to use. So, that is exactly what is happening in Ondo State at the moment.

You are a governorship aspirant on APC platform. What prompted your decision to contest the seat?
We cannot sit on the fence and expect that one day our state would move forward. If you have been to the state, you will realise that the state lacks infrastructure, despite its abundant resources. We were clamoring for change at the federal level, which eventually happened. But we have not seen any change in Ondo. For close to eight years that the present governor has been there, you can’t really point to a significant developmental project that has been done. If you want to talk about roads, it is still the same road I grew up to know, which leads from Ondo to the capital, Akure. That is still the one there.
Also, the poverty level is so high to the extent that somebody, having accumulated state funds, has now turned himself to a godfather that people are now looking up to for crumbs to come down to them. As it is now, it is time for Ondo people to be liberated, so I have looked at all these things and realised that it will be nice for us to have new ideas; a purpose driven vision towards reviving the state.

From all you have said, you are creating an impression that Mimiko has not done anything for the state but after his first term in office, he was applauded, which eventually won him a second term. So, how do we juxtapose your claim and that of the people?

I want to correct an impression; it is not that Mimiko has not done anything, but there are several developmental areas which ought to impact in the people’s lives which he has not touched. If you look at the populace in general, the poverty level in the state is a clear indicator of what is on ground in the state presently. And what the people are clamouring for is that there should be improvement in their standard of living. They want employment and job opportunities; they want the environment to be conducive for business to thrive and for investors to come and invest. They want an environment where the youth can have things to do. There are various sustainable programmes other than sharing money; sustainable programme that graduates from the state can be rest assured that when they leave school, they can get jobs.

We are of the opinion that coming into the government; we want to do things that people can see and not cosmetic empowerment programme that we have seen over the years. Empowerment is beyond sharing money. If you want to distribute cash, people will take the cash and just spend it on what is not relevant and the next day, they will still come back. So what we are saying is let us teach people how to fish and not give them fish. I wouldn’t say Mimiko hasn’t done anything at all but I believe there is a room for greater improvement.

Mimiko would definitely want to bring on board a successor. Are you not afraid that the governor’s popularity may affect the chances of your party, the APC?

Personally, I am not afraid. Yes, the PDP may have its agenda; we also have our own plans and strategy too in the APC. If you’ve been able to get feedback from the people as regards the administration of Mimiko, then you will know what I am talking about. Another thing you should know is that Ondo has gone beyond somebody coming to impose a candidate on them. And the APC, which is my party, doesn’t even buy that idea. If indeed it is true that Mimiko’s PDP administration has performed like his loyalists are saying, the electorate would decide.

The leadership of the APC in the state has said there will be a level- playing field all aspirants to contest the primary. Would you want to rely on this word considering the fact that the party is believed to always impose candidate?

The people of Ondo can testify to the fact that the APC is a party of leadership by example. If you look at the way the party is being structured, you will agree with me that this is a party that understands the basic agitation of the people. The party believes that every electorate counts. So, I don’t have any doubt about what the leadership of the party has said that there will be a level- playing ground for all aspirants. The leadership of the party won’t do otherwise; there will be a level- playing ground for all the aspirants to prove themselves.

What is your reaction to the opinion that your party, the APC is a foreign party in Ondo and that it’s being controlled by people from outside the state?

That opinion is not true. If you look at the last presidential election, you will see that APC is not a foreign party in the state. It is a simple analogy of what APC is in the state at the moment. It is a platform that has grown beyond the imagination of any party in Nigeria. The APC has a well-structured platform that cuts across all the nooks and crannies of the state. As we are sitting here now, the state executive members are working. For the APC to have won in the presidential and National Assembly elections, why will anybody be saying that the party is a foreign party? I can’t even understand this, is APC a party registered in Ghana or India?

What should Ondo people expect in your first year in office, if you eventually emerge as the governor of the state?

If the people decide to make me governor, in my first year, we will make the state relevant and conducive for investors to come in. So, if I become the governor, I want to bring my business ideas, experience and exposure into running the government of the state. I will do everything to market the state in such a way that investors will be very willing to come in. Ondo State is blessed with vast land where industries can be sited.

From what we know, election into the position of governor will gulp a huge amount of money and there are people in Ondo who are loaded with cash preparing for the exercise. How prepared are you financially?
You said there are people in Ondo who are loaded with cash and are prepared. I want to make something clear. Loaded with cash is relative. Anything you want to do in life and you are not passionate about it, you can’t achieve it. I must confess to you, whatever we need to do as regards the coming election, it is going to be well taken care of. I am not rich. God is the only rich one, but for this election, I can tell you that I am fullyready financially, spiritually, morally, physically and politically. And I know that by the grace of God, we will be there.

To contest this kind of position in Nigeria, you must be a core party man. How active and strong would you say you are in the APC?

The APC is an amalgamation of some political parties. My being a party man dates back to the days of defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) and National Republican Convention and if you followed the trend, you will realize that at a point, the SDP metamorphosed into the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and later we moved to the Action Congress (AC) and later to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the amalgamation of parties like the CPC, ACN, ANPP and a faction of APGA gave birth to what we have as the APC today. I am not a new person in the system but the fact that I am a business man doesn’t mean that I am not a committed party man. To God be the glory, what you are seeing now is not something I just came up with. I have identified with this cause in various capacities as a law- abiding citizen over the years. I am a progressive at heart and by birth.

BREAKING : Al Jazeera Condemns Verdict As Baher Mohamed, Peter Greste & Mohamed Fahmy Found Guilty By Cairo Court

Al Jazeera Condemns Egypt Verdict

August 29, 2015

Following today’s retrial verdict in Cairo, Al Jazeera Media Network’s Acting Director General Dr Mostefa Souag said:

“Today’s verdict defies logic and common sense. Our colleagues Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy will now have to return to prison, and Peter Greste is sentenced in absentia.”

The whole case has been heavily politicized and has not been conducted in a free and fair manner. There is no evidence proving that our colleagues in any way fabricated news or aided and abetted terrorist organisations and at no point during the long drawn out retrial did any of the unfounded allegations stand up to scrutiny. A report issued by a technical committee assigned by the court in Egypt contradicted the accusations made by the public prosecutor and stated in its report that the seized videos were not fabricated,. Baher, Peter and Mohamed have been sentenced despite the fact that not a shred of evidence was found to support the extraordinary and false charges against them.

“Today’s verdict is yet another deliberate attack on press freedom. It is a dark day for the Egyptian judiciary; rather than defend liberties and a free and fair media they have compromised their independence for political reasons.”

“Al Jazeera Media Network will continue to call for their freedom and an end to the ordeal for Baher, Peter and Mohamed and the six Al Jazeera staff who were sentenced in absentia”.

“The support shown for Baher, Peter and Mohamed has been loud and unified and has come from every corner of the world, from world leaders, journalists, human rights organisations and the general public. Alongside demanding the release of our colleagues, Al Jazeera calls on every one to continue the fight for the freedom of speech, for the right of people to be informed and for the right of journalists around the world to be able to do their job.

“We will not rest until Baher, Peter, Mohamed and the six Al Jazeera staff sentenced in absentia are freed and formally and definitively acquitted from the trumped up charges against them.”

In Commemoration of President @MBuhari's 100 Days in Office

Garba Shehu
Good Morning Friends, In commemoration of President Muhammadu Buhari's 100 Days in office next month, I wrote an OP-ED yesterday, titled "Understanding Buhari in 100 Days".

I hope you find it interesting...

UNDERSTANDING BUHARI IN 100 DAYS

THE ENORMOUSLY popular talk show,Berekete on WazobiaFM radio, Abuja station told the incredible, yet true story of the hardworking and respected school teacher somewhere in Plateau state who hanged himself.

He hadn't been paid salary for seven straight months. He came home to find that no one had eaten and two of the children had medical prescriptions for which there was no money.

He sneaked out without talking to anyone.

After a long while, news came home that he had strangely been caught with a stolen goat.

On his day in court, the teacher confessed to the offense. The reason he stole, he told the local judge, was that he hadn't been paid for seven months and when he got home to see what he saw, he just couldn't stand it.

The judge allowed him to go home on bail on self-recognition given, as he said, the good impression the entire village had of the otherwise respected teacher.

All were shocked to find his body dangling from tree the morning after. He couldn't live with the shame.

In the recommendations and notes the Ahmed Joda transition committee presented to him as President -EIect, Muhammadu Buhari was informed that a section of the Fedaral government as well as 27 states hadn't paid salaries, in some case for up to a year.

The Joda committee advised that this was a national emergency and should be treated as such.

It is on account of this that one of theactivities- please note the choice of this word:activities, not achievements- of President Muahammadu Buhari in these past three months is the settlement of unpaid salaries. This is going on right now.

Like the proverbial blinking of the eye, Saturday September 5th will mark the 100th day of the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress, APC government which took office on May 29th after the new party became the first in opposition to unseat an incumbent government in an election adjudged by everyone as free and fair.

There are many out there who say that the performance of a president and his government in terms success or failure cannot be judged in 100 days and I agree with them.

But history will be written anyway. In the coming week or two, a rash of commentaries and analyses to commemorate the event will be made.

I myself don't deny that 100 days is long enough to know and understand the man who is the head of a government.

Buhari arrived power with strong support from young men and women and this country's poor. The new government was not favored at election by the monied power-brokers although that did not stop the President from taking measures such as improving security that are good for business and investment.

This government is business-friendly but not one that is for crony capitalism.

The new government inherited enormous problems created by the tainted PDP administration, largely caused by the lack of governance, corruption and lawlessness. This was mostly evident in the last two years of the Jonathan Goodluck administration. As the President continues to point out,the drift is most evident in the oil sector.

I believe that there is enough on the ground in those 100 days to understand President Buhari, his government and what it stands for.

I will cite a few of these.

Before I do that, I will make a little confession.
In the course of electioneering, the presidential campaign had so many centers of public communication which, for whatever reason were on the loose.

There is a certain document tagged "One Hundred Things Buhari Will Do in 100 Days" and the other, "My Covenant With Nigerians." Both pamphlets bore the authorized party logo but as the Director of Media and Communications in that campaign, I did not fund or authorize any of those. I can equally bet my last Kobo that Candidate Buhari did not see or authorize those publications.

As a consequence of these publications, expectations have been raised unreasonably, that as President, Muhammadu Buhari will wave his hand and all the problems that the country faces- insecurity, corruption, unemployment, poor infrastructure would go away.

But that notwithstanding, President Buhari has given the job his best shot and the whole country is saying that we never had it so good. He has re-instituted the values of hard work and administrative efficiency. The President says times without number that this country needs to fix governance and that he won't tolerate laziness.

Some of the other activities I wish to enumerate also include the fact of his taking relations with the country's immediate neighbors to new heights. By their open admissions, this country's neighbors did not have someone they could talk to on the deteriorating security situation in the Lake Chad Basin area in Aso Rock.

Buhari embarked on his foreign policy on Day Four of his administration.

When he met Barack Obama, the U.S president told the Nigerian leader that he was getting it right and that it is only when Nigeria gets it right that Africa will get it right.

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon who came calling this week said that our president is "courageous, focused and firm."

Relations with the "G 7" group of industrialized countries have since been "reset" and the dividends of this have begun to flow inwards.

In the area of economic management, Nigerians are already seeing things happen that they thought were not possible in so short a time.

He didn't put a Kobo to finance the power sector. Yet, reading his body language alone and knowing that there are things you cannot do and get away with under Buhari, electricity supply all over the countries has risen to unprecedented heights.

Actually, some cities are on the verge of calling 24-hour, round the clock power supply. The country generates more power than can internally be taken by the deplorable distribution system we have on the ground, which points to the next challenge that the country faces.

Framework for the management of the country's finances has been put in place. The wobbly Naira is being stabilized and inflation is headed towards a single digit.President Buhari is keeping a close eye on the government treasury.

Agriculture is getting its own shot in the arm.
Rice importation has been curtailed and seven governors whose states are priming a massive local production of the commodity have had a strategy meeting with the President on the next steps that are coming. Americans say their intervention in our agriculture will come next year.

Boko Haram, which had more or less been allowed to fester for about five years is about being ended but what is even more interesting is that intelligence coming from the fired-up armed forces who now work in synergy with each other is raising hope that the Chibok girls may, repeat may be found in good numbers in a geographic location of interest somewhere in the North-East.

President Buhari is being praised at home and abroad for his ongoing fight against corruption. He said from the beginning that his government will not tolerate this vice.

Borrowing the words of India Narendra Modi's, he said himself that "I won't steal and I'll not allow others to do it." President Buhari has walked his talk since he come to office.

Himself and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have not only given up half of their salary, they have cut a good number of funding lines to their official homes and offices.

President Buhari also takes the environment seriously. He blames the lack of security in the Lake Chad region on the recession, almost drying up of the lake. He has undertaken to clean up the Ogoniland.

In this country, appointments and removal from office are done usually in accordance with a spoils system.

A new government sacks officials on the basis only that it did not appoint them, by the predecessor-adminstration.

President Buhari has shown that his government is different. He wants to look at each case on its own merit and it is clear by now that he is not ready to surrender the country to burnt out politicians. Technocrats will have a big place in his administration.
He has appointed no ministers yet, but the government is running smoothly.

In this period of three months, government certainly deserves a pat on the back for improved power, reform in the energy sector, foreign relations fight against corruption and insurgency and the fact of Nigerians being at peace, not only among themselves but with their neighbors and the rest of the world.

In think in summary, I would like to end this piece by saying that President Muhammadu Buhari will turn out to be a leader in the tradition of Lee Kuan-Yu and India's current reform-minded Prime Minister Modi with strong and clear emphasis on detail and execution. He may however differ with them by not micro-managing things.

SSA MEDIA AND PUBLICITY TO THE PRESIDENT.
